Many solar energy technologies have been developed to take advantage of the Sun’s rays. Some of these technologies use solar energy directly in the form of light or heat energy, while other technologies are used to obtain electricity from solar energy. Solar hot water systems utilize the Sun’s rays to heat the water. These systems can be used to heat domestic hot water or an area, as well as to heat a pool. These systems are mostly composed of a thermal solar panel and a tank.

Photovoltaic Technology

Photovoltaic (PV) technologies convert energy from direct sunlight into electricity. When sunlight contacts the PV module made of semiconductor material, the electrons separate from their atomic bonds. This electron separation produces an electric current. PV modules are not mobile and can usually operate for a minimum of thirty years or longer with minimal maintenance.

PV electricity generation is most efficient when the Sun is at its peak in the sky. So it is most productive in the middle of the day and can help balance the most expensive electricity when the daily need is highest. Homeowners can build a few dozen PV panels to support their electricity bills. And companies can produce large PV panels to provide clean electricity to their customers.


Concentrating Solar Power

Concentrated solar energy (CSP) plants use a conventional steam turbine to generate electricity and use mirrors to intensify the thermal energy of the Sun. The thermal energy that concentrated in a CSP plant can be stored and used to generate electricity, if required, during the day or at night. Today, more than 1,400 MW of CSP facilities are operating in the US.

Solar water heaters gather in three groups.

  1. Active systems use pumps for the water or heat transfer fluid.
  2. Passive systems provide the natural transfer of water or heat transfer fluid.
  3. Mass systems aim to heat the water tank by direct sunlight.

Common solar energy applications include

Flat plate solar collectors: These are the systems used to produce hot water in homes. It is also widely used in Turkey.

Single-focus solar power plants: These are used to obtain heat at a very high temperature at the focal point. These power plants use linear mirrors, bowls or giant mirrors directed at a central focus. Generally, we use them in electricity production. However, they have not gained any prevalence yet.

Vacuum tube solar energy systems: Vacuum tube solar collectors: the heat path connects two cylindrical glass tubes. And the air is produced by the connection between this process. The Sun’s rays are falling on the surface of the outer cylindrical tube work by absorbing the inner surface of the cylindrical tube through the airless medium. Since there is no substance in between, only the radiant system water is independent of the outside air temperature.

Solar cookers: These are structures that collect solar heat in the form of cups or boxes. It is more widely used in developing countries.

Trombe wall: It is a passive Solar energy system packed with sandwich-shaped glass and air ducts. At night, the Trombe wall radiates the energy that it accumulates through radiation.

Passage air panel: They are Active Solar heating and ventilation system. It consists of a perforated wall facing the Sun, acting as a Thermal Solar panel. The panel preheats the building’s ventilation system. It’s a cheap method which means up to 70% efficiency is available.

Solar ponds: With the help of salts thrown into the pool, the temperature is obtained at the bottom. They remained mostly experimental systems but did not show any prevalence.

Solar chimneys: When the heat collected on the floor of a building is directed to a high and narrow chimney, it activates the turbine installed in the chimney. The solar chimney is one of the solar energy types that remained in the experimental phase.

Water treatment systems: These are some pool system. A tilted glass cover is placed on top of the pool, and evaporating water is removed from salt and concentrated on the cover.
