Wave Power

there is a wave power plant.

Wave power is a strong and limitless renewable energy source. The wind power create the waves that been in ocean or sea. When the wind blow toward to sea & ocean surface, waves appear. Today, wave power is used by developed countries and firms for generating electricity thanks to wind power.

This renewable wave energy source use the oceans and huge seas differently from hydroelectric power. Also, it doesn’t need to a dam or a river. Wave power only consists only of the oscillating motion of the wind on the waves and under its surface. Therefore, we don’t mistake for tidal energy. Because tidal energy is simply called the ripple movement of the sea with its gravitational force.

What are the advantages of Wave Energy?

There are many pros of wave energy. The renewable energy seen as a solution against energy crisis in the world. Because our world fill up ¾ water. Let’s see advantages of wave power;

  • Wave energy or water energy has many advantages for society and nature.
  • It is an inexhaustible source of energy and is limitless.
  • Reduces dependence on fossil fuels that cannot be renewed and consumed.
  • Wave energy which is a clean energy source does not pollute the environment and nature.
  • Wave energy creates new economic opportunities. Thanks to the energy industry, it reduces unemployment.
  • Wave energy provides electricity where there is no electricity.
  • Wave power also enables the use of potential technologies in the works such as sea and ocean.
  • The energy allows us to explore the riches of the sea and ocean.
  • Wave energy also protects the coasts of our water resources.

What are the disadvantages of Wave Energy?

As a simply, there are also some disadvantages of wave energy although there are some precious advantages of wave power. Then, let’s see what disadvantages of the wave energy are.

  • Wave power plants are costly. Therefore, the energy type can’t be created easily.
  • To generate electricity thanks to wave power, a wave calculate design must be done differently for every wave length. Because every wave length is not same. Therefore, there is no standard wave length.
  • While ocean power technologies is being applying, some problems can appear in the ocean power technologies areas. These may be ship rotation areas, military bases, fishing areas and cables been in underground. If authors don’t be carefully, big problems can damage to power plant areas.
  • Wave Energy generators can cause to noise pollution.
  • In the wave power plants, due to seasonal and weather conditions may cause problems in wave power plant systems.
  • Wave energy production at sea can interact with transport.
  • The waves must be strong enough to produce the maximum amount of electricity. However, it is not possible to find this power in all seas. Therefore, wave power gets help from wind power.

How does wave power work?

The wave energy is directly derived from the wave surface or the wave pressures under the surface. The waves are produced by winds blowing on the surface of the sea or oceans. In many parts of the world the wind is a regular and continuous work to create continuous waves. Sea and ocean waves have great energy. Wave energy machines produce energy directly from the surface movements of the waves or from the wave pressures.

Wave Power Farms

We know developed countries use the wave power plants mostly. Do you wonder which countries have wave power farms? Let’s see which countries use the wave power plants.

  • Orkney wave power station – 2,4 MW – England
  • Agucadoura Wave Farm – 2,25 MW – Portugal
  • Islay Limpet – 500 kW –England
  • Mutriku Breakwater Wave Farm – 300 kW – Spain
  • Azura wave power station – 200 kW – United States
  • SDE Sea Wave Power Station – 40 kW – Israel
  • Fred. Olsen Ltd.’s bolt lifesaver– 30 kW – United States
  • SINN power waves energy converter / conditioner– 20 kW – Greece

Potential of Wave Power

Wave power has a big potential. However, there are some problems to work with waves. Motion of the ocean proves the waves is consistent. Also, weather and seasonal conditions effect to wave length. There are some solutions to use the wave energy effectively.

Another challenge for effectively using wave energy is to build devices that can survive in harsh ocean conditions. Temperature, salinity and storm damage can create big problems. Also, the main problem is that each insertion for devices that can withstand these difficult conditions makes them less economical.

Some firms think to create wave farms although the energy type has some harnesses. Because the wave energy is renewable and clear. For example; wave energy is like a sun or moon. The precious renewable energy type is absolutely green and sustainable for future of the world.  Here, hardness is to answer how to build effectively of the wave power plants.

Wave Energy Technologies

Today, technology has developed itself and continues to evolve. This process effect many industry and sector. One of the industry is wave technology too. Therefore, there are many developed and tested wave energy technologies. The technologies are very diverse and use in many areas of the wave industry. Aim is to generate energy from the wave.

Authors and sectoral firms designed the wave technologies to set on oceans, shores, seas and distant marine areas. The great wave technology are installed on the surface of water. So, there are big differences in technical concepts and designs.

They may differ in terms of their orientation to water and the order in which they convert energy into waves. With developing of the wave technologies, there are 4 main application to set outer continent. These are; Dot Absorbers, Reducers, Dropped Waves and Terminators.

there is a massive wave for generating energy

Dot Absorbers

Dot absorbers is in a sliding form because of the wave movement. Generally, dot absorbers is similar to floating oceanographic buoys. Besides, they use the rise and fall of the wave at a single point for energy transformation.

Do you know why dot absorbers is used? In a sentence, authors use the dot absorbers to learn up and down motions of the wave. Also, it is used to generate power from hydraulic and electromechanical energy.

Reducers

Wave reducers are long and multi-part floating structures that are oriented parallel to the direction of the waves.

Abandoned Wave

Abandoned wave has reservoirs filled with incoming waves. Therefore, water is then released and gravity causes it to flow back into the ocean. Here, the energy of the falling water is used to rotate the hydro turbines to produce power.

Terminators

Terminators extends perpendicular to the direction of the wave, capturing or reflecting the power of the wave. These devices are typically on the shore or at the seaside. However, floating versions are also designed for offshore applications. The oscillating water column is a type of terminator that enters a room below the water and holds the air up.

The wave motion causes the captured water column to move up and down like a piston and the air to generate power from an aperture connected to the turbine. These devices usually have power ratings of 500 kW to 2 MW depending on the wave climate and device dimensions.
