Two Companies Break the Solar Panel Efficiency Record

 

In recent days, two distinct companies have broken two notable records in solar energy. Solar panel manufacturer JinkoSolar has reached a brand-new record with 22.04 per cent efficiency in P-type polycrystal silicon cells, the most widely used type of solar cells. Almost simultaneously, another record came from the solar research facility Fraunhofer ISE. Fraunhofer ISE also achieved a productivity record of 22.3 per cent in N-type polycrystal cells.

Polycrystal solar cells are the type of solar cells used today in most of the solar panels installed around the world. Today, polycrystal solar panels account for 60 per cent of the global solar panel production capacity.

Polycrystal solar panels offer 15 – 16.5 per cent efficiency, while monocrystal (single crystal) solar panels, this ratio increases to 18 – 22 per cent. Polycrystal solar panels are more economical than monocrystal panels. Because of that, the producers generally prefer polycrystal panels.

However, thanks to technological advances in the field of monocrystal solar cells in recent years, such panels are on the rise again. In particular, Lorgi Group’s investments in this area have led to a shift in the balance of the solar panel market. Mono and poly ratio of solar panels to be installed in 2018 is said to be 50-50 per cent. After this point, monocrystal panels are expected to become dominant in the market.

While both broken-records are extremely important for the expansion of solar energy, authorities believe JinkoSolar’s achievement is more valuable. Indeed, Fraunhofer ISE broke the efficiency record in N-type cells in “laboratory size” solar cells. And JinkoSolar broke a record in solar cells of suitable size, achieved a short-term success.

As in the case of poly- and mono-crystal solar cells, P-type and N-type preference is expected to change significantly in the sector. Although P-type semiconductors are preferred in solar panels today, the transition from P-type to N-type has accelerated recently. This preference is due to the solar panels with N-type semiconductor have higher efficiency.

Engineers will soon introduce this new solar cell technology and the modern production process into the mass production phase. The Fraunhofer ISE is a little further away from moving its new technology into mass production. But it has the potential to become one of the key players in the changing solar market in the future with its investment in the N-type solar panels.
