Is water a renewable energy ?

A lot of times, people wonder if the water is renewable energy or not. It can be a little puzzling matter because when you think about water process, people tend to think that it can be an exhaustible resource. Nonetheless, it is not an exhaustible or deplorable source of energy.

For this reason, yes, water is technically a renewable energy since it can be used more than once. Moreover, there is a phenomenon called rain cycle which makes the water a renewable energy source.

However, there are some issues to consider water resources. Because of the rapid population growth in this age, a considerable amount of water resources are depleting before they can replenish themselves such as drinking water, groundwater, and surface water reserves. On top of that, some other factors make water renewable even less. The most crucial ones are water contamination and water pollution.

Why Water Is a Renewable Energy?

To answer this question more precisely, first, we need to define and explain what renewable energy is. Most of the people often think that renewable energies are infinite, and they can not be used up. In reality, however, renewable energy sources can be used up. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), renewable energy resources are “Fuels that can be easily created or ‘renewed’”.

Thanks to the rain cycling, water moves throughout the earth perpetually. If the temperature rises, water evaporates and soar on the air, and then it becomes a cloud. Over time, that water return by raining. If a society uses its water sources rapidly, the water source can run out, but it can come back over time.

Another method that makes water renewable is conservation. It is a method of replenishing a water resource. Conservation method works because of the rain cycle. Think about a dried-up lake, if people implement conservation methods on that dried reservoir, rain cycle will refill or replenish that area over time.

Uses of Water as a Renewable Energy

To meet the world’s ever-increasing energy demand, scientists have made many efforts to increase the use of renewable energy sources in all areas. They have developed projects such as the use of solar cells to benefit from the sun and the use of windmills to benefit from the wind. Geothermal energy, which is the main area where water is used, uses water as an energy source.

Geothermal energy, which is one of the most important renewable energy sources, is a resource that can be used in countless fields such as electricity generation, medicine, tourism, agriculture, and industry.

The main benefit of geothermal energy source is that it is renewable, that is, it is a kind of energy that is difficult to deplete with proper use. Also, geothermal energy areas are easy to detect and produce, its cost is low, the return on investment yield money in a very short time, and the environmental damage is very low compared to other sources.

We use geothermal energy in various fields, from greenhouse heating to tourism and agricultural uses. It is a type of energy that does not harm the environment.

Geothermal energy is essentially a kind of thermal energy that is located in the lower layers of the world and is considered as an important renewable energy source. People have been using this energy source for centuries for water and earth warming, medical treatments or cooking.

Other than geothermal energy, we also use water as a renewable energy source on hydroelectric power plants. These power plants convert the power of the flowing water into electricity. The amount of energy in the flowing water is determined by the flow or drop rate of the water.

Water flowing in a large river carries a large amount of energy. Or, when the water is dropped from a very high point, again a high amount of energy is obtained. Either way, the water which is taken into the duct or pipes flows towards the turbines and makes the turbines with arms such as propeller rotate for generating electricity. Turbines are connected to generators and convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
